Hip Cooks Cooking Class

February 3, 2007

A few weeks ago I finally got to try Hip Cooks. I’ve been wanting to try a class ever since I came across it on some random food blog about six months ago.

Hipcooks is a Los Angeles-based cooking school that feeds the minds, imaginations & tummies of Hip Angelinos. Hipster pupils are taught how to impress future guests with dinner party techniques. Hipsters love to entertain at home: they get to show off their fabulous place & amazing culinary talents in a setting that is much more fun & relaxed than a restaurant.

I love cooking I just never really get around to it. Cooking like eating I think of more a social thing than a need. I mean I eat but generally don’t cook unless it’s for at least a few people. I know I’m weird.

The Kitchen

This class is really cool because it’s very intimate and welcoming. They also have a nice loft space for the classes just north of downtown. I signed up for the Pasta Casa class since I had never made pasta before from scratch. I had a few reservations about it through because I was going alone and wasn’t quite sure what to expect. But those feelings were quickly washed away after being there for a few minutes. These classes are great for couples, singles, families, or friends. My class was a mix of all of the above, all 9 of us. Classes are small with just enough people to make for a interesting night.

We got started by having quick introductions then proceeded to dive in head first into making the pasta. This class is very hands on. The instructor delegates various cooking steps to each person. But you can be as hands on as you want to be or you can hang back, but really, you don’t want to hang back.

What’s also cool about this class is that you get a nice dinner. Wine is served with each course you prepare so you’re constantly cooking and eating.

Classes are $55 which is well worth it. You get a big nice dinner and you learn something. You’re also provided with all of the recipes at the end of the class.

Some of the other titles for the classes are ‘Turning Japanese’, ‘Shortcut to Nirvana’ (Indian food), ‘Hot Soup Focus Group’, ‘Cocktail Party’, ‘Your Just Desserts’, ‘Autumn in Paris’, ‘Summer Salads’, ‘Dinner PArty for 10′, ‘Romantic Dinner for two’, ‘Thai One on’, a Tapas class… I mean the list goes on and on.

Setting the table

Don’t be scared though, the classes are great for beginners all the way to seasoned gourmets. I consider myself a pretty good cook and I didn’t feel bored ever.

Take a look at the website for a list and descriptions of all the classes. There you can also sign up for a class or even give a gift certificate.

This is something you’re going to go to again and again. Several of the people at my class had been before.

They even have classes designed for singles. Straight singles I suppose. Whatever. hah
